RTT® vs. traditional hypnosis: understanding the difference

If you are looking for a way to move past a belief that keeps holding you back, feel steadier day to day, or build real confidence, you have probably come across both Rapid Transformational Therapy® (RTT®) and traditional hypnosis.

Both use hypnosis to work with the subconscious mind. But they differ in method, in what they set out to achieve, and in the kind of change they aim for. Understanding the difference makes it easier to choose the one that suits you.

What traditional hypnosis is

Traditional hypnosis is a deeply relaxed, focused state in which the conscious mind quietens and the subconscious becomes more receptive to positive suggestion.

A trained hypnotherapist uses guided imagery, affirmation and therapeutic suggestion to support things like:

  • Stepping away from an unwanted habit, such as smoking
  • Winding down and handling everyday pressure
  • Settling into sleep more easily
  • Building confidence
  • Feeling calmer and more at ease

Someone who wants to stop smoking, for example, might receive repeated suggestions that cigarettes no longer appeal to them. Traditional hypnosis can work well, but it tends to change behaviour through repetition and reinforcement, usually across several sessions.

What Rapid Transformational Therapy is

RTT is an award-winning approach developed by Marisa Peer. It combines hypnosis with principles drawn from psychotherapy, neuroscience, cognitive behavioural therapy and neuro-linguistic programming.

Rather than changing a behaviour on its own, RTT looks for the root cause: the belief, the pattern, or the early experience underneath it.

In a session you are gently guided into hypnosis, where you can reach the memories and beliefs held in the subconscious mind. Together we find where a belief began, look at what it has meant to you since, and replace it with something that serves you better. See how a session works.

The aim is not temporary relief. It is change that holds.

The key differences

1. RTT works with the root cause

Traditional hypnosis reinforces a positive suggestion to encourage a change in behaviour. RTT goes further back, to the belief or experience that created the pattern in the first place. When that is addressed, change tends to feel natural rather than effortful.

2. It is an investigative process

RTT invites you to explore your own subconscious rather than simply receive suggestion. People often come away understanding, sometimes for the first time, why a pattern around confidence, self-worth, procrastination or self-doubt has followed them for years. That understanding is often where the shift begins.

3. It reinforces the new belief

Once an old belief has been found and reframed, RTT uses transformational suggestion written for you specifically. You receive a personalised recording to listen to daily over the weeks that follow, which reinforces the new pattern while it is still settling. Traditional hypnosis may include a recording too, but it is usually a general one rather than one built around your session.

4. It often works in fewer sessions

Traditional hypnotherapy often means ongoing appointments to keep reinforcing a suggestion over time. RTT is designed to do its work quickly. Every person is different, and some things benefit from more support. Even so, many people find a meaningful shift within one to three sessions.

Which one fits you?

Both are genuinely useful. Traditional hypnosis may be the right fit if you are looking for relaxation, relief from everyday pressure, or help changing one specific habit through positive suggestion.

If you have found yourself repeating the same pattern despite real effort, or you are ready to understand why that pattern exists, RTT offers a deeper route, aimed at change that lasts.

What RTT may support

People come to RTT hoping to:

  • Loosen a belief that no longer serves them
  • Feel calmer and steadier day to day
  • Build self-confidence
  • Face something they have been avoiding
  • Step away from an unwanted habit
  • Feel more at ease in their relationships
  • Find motivation and focus again
  • Build thought patterns that support them rather than undermine them

A question I am often asked

Is RTT better than traditional hypnosis?

Neither is universally better. They serve different purposes. Traditional hypnosis works mainly through positive suggestion and behaviour change. RTT is built to find and resolve the subconscious root cause underneath the behaviour. If what you want is deep, lasting change rather than managing something at the surface, RTT may be the better fit for you.

Real change tends to begin at the moment you stop fighting the symptom and start understanding the belief driving it.
